How Solo Travel Will Change Your Life

Hi fellow travel enthusiasts!

Recently, I travelled for the first time on my own for my birthday vacation. (YouTube video to come). During this trip I came to the reminder that it’s an experience that if able, everyone should experience at least once. It can be as intense as an extensive international trip, or a short weekend getaway trip within/around your city/town.

I know, before you say it, travelling alone is very intimidating, and may be a bit scary. However, it’s one of those life-changing experiences that you’ll never forget. When considering venturing out and exploring the world on you own, take time to think of your why. I’m suggesting this because you want to be mentally prepared to travel solo so you can reap all of its benefits without subconsciously (or consciously) putting any limitations on yourself.

Some of the questions to ask yourself can include the following :

  • Why am I travelling on my own?
  • Will I be lonely?
  • How long do I plan to solo travel?
  • What type of activities do I want to partake in during my solo travel? Will these experiences also allow me to meet new people?
  • Am I open to meeting new people?

One of the biggest questions I’ve gotten when sharing my experiences of travelling on my own is the thought of loneliness. This is something that can occur for some if they are not prepared. It is natural to feel alone when you are in an unfamiliar environment and don’t know anybody. However, when travelling alone you’ll quickly find that being and feeling lonely is not something that occurs often. If you plan an itinerary for your solo travel adventures, you’ll find yourself surrounded by, and eventually connected with many new strangers (who then become friends), that you can meet and interact with. Strike up conversations with locals, form connections no matter how brief! If you’ve taken the time to reflect and be open to meeting new people, and building experiences with them it will be hard for you to find yourself lonely. One way to easily position yourself in this situation is by joining a tour group. This will allow you to easily encounter new people (and experiences), and make new friends.

When travelling on your own, especially as a single woman, (in my case, as a single Black woman), I’d strongly suggest you take the time to consider your safety throughout the duration of your trip. As beautiful as the world is, it is also a dangerous place and you have to ensure that you take care of yourself when exploring. I’d suggest always make sure you share all of your travel information, along with hotel, and activities planned with someone you trust. Be sure to share your contact information as well. Do your research prior to travel so you can get a sense of the environment you’ll be visiting and if it is the right place to go on your own. Be aware of customs, including manner of dress, and actions so as to not be considered inappropriate (Don’t forget, the world is not the same everywhere you go and it’s important to be respectful to different cultures.)

Only consider travelling to areas that are known as safe, and don’t you dare think about going out late at night on your own. As with all other common tips, be sure you phone is always charged and you have access to use it in another country. Watch your drinks (never take a drink from the bar, from a stranger), and always be aware of your surroundings. While still having fun of course!

With solo travel comes the sense of freedom. Being able to explore a new area without the concern of someone else is so freeing! Not making a schedule, and getting up to do whatever you please if one of the biggest joys of solo travel. Time does not exist and in those moments the world is your oyster to unravel. The freedom you experience during solo travel provides immense opportunities for self-discovery and personal growth. When you’re in a foreign place with nobody but yourself to rely on, you learn to trust your instincts, make decisions independently, and step out of your comfort zone. You discover strengths you never knew you had and come face to face with your fears and insecurities, learning to conquer them one step at a time.

If you’ve been thinking about travelling solo, but haven’t gotten the courage to do so, this is your sign. Take the plunge and do it!   Embrace the unknown, embrace the solitude, and embrace the incredible journey of self-discovery and fun that awaits you. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Wishing you happy and safe travels!
