Spring skincare

A new season is here and I’m excited about it! Spring is in the air and it’s time to show some skin. Regardless of the season, it’s important to care for the needs of your skin; these needs may change when the weather fluctuates from cold to hot. Typically, during the cooler season, we use richer creams, oils, and other moisturizing products. As the weather gets warmer, a switch is made to lighter products including, gels, serums, and mists.

As someone who has combination skin (experiencing both dry and oily skin), I’ve had to be more attentive to its needs as I’ve gotten older in order to maintain a youthful glow. From my experience, my skin is more oily as the weather gets warmer. With that being said, it’s important to care for skin during the spring and summer season just as much as you do during the winter. One of the things I do once the spring season rolls around, is to switch my face cleansers from richly emollient to lighter cleansers  that are geared towards a normal skin type, that way my face doesn’t feel clogged after washing.

Next, I increase the amount of times I exfoliate each week; up to 2-3 times per week. During this season I experience a lot of dry skin flakes especially on my nose so I have to exfoliate more than usual. Personally, I enjoy using both physical and chemical exfoliants on my skin. The process of exfoliation allows for you to remove dead skin cells, this helps your skin to go through the full cycle of regenerating fresh glowing skin. Your skin benefits from the help received as you exfoliate as part of the cell turnover process. Skin cell turnover is when your skin creates new cells, the dead cells are removed and can be seen on the surface of your skin. The dead skin cells shed are part of the cell turnover process that occurs every 28 – 40 days. When you exfoliate, you are encouraging the dead skin to be removed quickly in order to reveal new, fresh, younger looking skin.

If you have sensitive skin I would not suggest you exfoliate more than once a week as it may irritate your skin.

Lastly I switch from heavy to lighter moisturizers on my skin for the spring season. This way my skin stays moisturized without feeling the heavy coating of a winter moisturizer.
