How to stay focused when working from home

Hello world! I hope you are all staying safe, keeping healthy, washing your hands, and practicing social isolation and social distancing during this pandemic we are all globally living in of COVID – 19.

During this time, many of us may be working from home; personally, this week marks week two for me working from home and I’ve gotten into the groove of this change in work-life. Last week one aspect of my work from home activities that I paid attention to most was staying focused. When you are at home, and with so much going on in the world, it may be difficult to stay focused. Being focused on your task at hand is so important; especially when working from home so you can get your work done as you normally would when in an office setting.

My secret to staying focused is blocking off my calendar with activities and setting alarms. I block off my calendar with each and every activity I need to do during the work day. This includes blocking off time for my lunch break and a few 5 minute breaks to stand up and stretch. I also found that setting alarm clocks that reminded me of when to shift focus of work activities has helped a lot!

It’s all about creating an environment of structure and consistency. Without the habit of structure and consistency it’s easy to fall off the tracks and lose focus on what needs to get done – trust me I know! Doing this 1. blocking off your calendar with activities and 2. setting alarms , will also let you set a healthy work life balance when working from home. You will be able to enjoy the work that you do while also enjoying your home once you clock out.
