4 Tips for Planning a Staycation

Hello fellow Wunderlusters! Today’s travel post is a little bit different, it touches on taking a vacation, but in your own city!

But wait, you may be thinking; how is this a travel post? It’s a travel post because exploration and travel can take place anywhere at any time. A staycation is when you decide to check out and “travel” the city/hometown you live in by doing an activity that you have never done before. Staycations help you to view your city differently and try new activities and experiences in a way that is more affordable than travelling internationally.

Staycations give the opportunity to spend less while still getting the feel of a new adventure that you usually get when travelling abroad but with the advantage of being only a subway stop away from home. Personally, I find staycations a great way to combat feelings of fatigue when I’ve gone months in-between an international vacation.

I usually enjoy at least one staycation in my city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada at least once a year. I love rediscovering my love for Toronto in an affordable way. I try to explore new neighbourhoods, restaurants and a seasonal event during this time.

Tips for planning for a staycation:

  • Book your staycation in advance. Similar to a “traditional” vacation, plan ahead and buildup the excitement!
  • Try something new. Explore; do something you’ve never done in your city and have a new experience.
  • Budget. Budget for the activities you plan to do for your staycation so you don’t overspend.
  • Don’t think about your everyday problems. You’re on vacation. Chill out and relax!

Let me know in the comment section below if you’ve ever taken a staycation.

I’m originally from Scotland and whenever family visits, their vacations become mine too!!

We have such a great city!! 🇨🇦
